Awake

my rhododendrons-
robins erupt into song
just before the dawn

the sun rises-
heedless of the
whiskey and beer

Awake

slowly cooling sheets
echoes of the alarm clock-
bare traces of you

cold sunrise-
I wake up
alone

Awake

bleary eyed and tired-
the tile floor in the bathroom
cold beneath my feet

before sunrise-
my pillow whispers
sweet nothings

Awake

wild racing thoughts-
my fix is the sleep I so
desperately crave

an open window-
coyotes call out
in the rising dawn

Awake

I crawl into bed
too tired to fall asleep
reliving the day

a warm breeze-
awake in my bed
paralyzed
