Thunder

early autumn storms-
dark roiling thunderclouds vent
their mottled fury

distant thunder-
a cloud of starlings
darken the sky

Gone

our long entrance hall-
the empty peg on the wall
where your coat once hung

distant smoke-
years of farmland
turned to ash

Restless

months of sundays gone-
I still just can’t get used to
sleeping without you

autumn winds-
the restless swirl
of fallen leaves

Storm

in the western sky
the sun sets on iron clouds
promising thunder

leaves in the wind-
the low rumble
of distant thunder

Fall

summer’s final breath-
the wind in the autumn leaves
whispering goodbye

a covered bridge-
fallen leaves dance
before the rain

Marsh

among the rushes
herons stand in the salt marsh
waiting for the tide

auburn sunrise-
dawn breezes stir
fields of cattails

Night

my open window-
from the red barn a white owl
asks me one question

transfixed-
the field mouse stares
at his death

Still

summer afternoon-
the hollow ring of wind chimes
in the stagnant air

still water-
minnows gather
beneath the footbridge

Flowers

a yellow sundress-
the scent of lilac blossoms
carried on the breeze

dreams of dawn-
waking memories
of jasmine

Chimes

a hot acrid wind
rattles the sand blasted bones
hanging from the trees

cool lemonade-
wind chimes ring
on the front porch
