Marsh

wings skim the lake as
a great blue heron takes flight
in the predawn mist

the rising sun-
hidden amid
the cattails

Rain

in the driving rain-
train doors close as a blue suit
runs past my window

dripping leaves-
rippled shadows
in clear water

Flood

a raging torrent-
black water choked with debris
and bad memories

murky waters-
stirring up
the past

Ablaze

a beacon unlit
the lighthouse tender starts the
long journey upwards

your hot breath-
the birth of
a new flame

Atonement

alone with my sins-
I pray for atonement and
for the strength to change

overcast-
rain runs down
stained glass

Island

at work dreaming of
a caribbean romance
before summer ends

a dockside bar
rum runners and
buffet tunes

Shore

a horseshoe crab shell
empty in the shadow of
an upturned rowboat

moonlit surf-
the lifeguard tower
stands empty

Mermaid

the sea in the wind
salt, sand, and tropical sun
tangled in her hair

amid the waves-
she watches ships
ply her waters

Burden

down by the river
releasing slights collected
after all these years

on my back-
the weight of countless
grains of sand

Rain

her face to the sky
sundress plastered to her skin
at one with the rain

sandals in hand-
bare feet in
the wet grass
