Travel

rumbling through the dark
long trains roll westbound under
thunder and lightning

drying hay-
the countryside
glides past

Change

trying to balance-
one foot on the precipice
of your adulthood

the arc of the sun-
change made
in a single day

Danger

beauty and danger
your small delicate flower
surrounded by thorns

clearing haze-
following the trail
of blood diamonds

Island

at work dreaming of
a caribbean romance
before summer ends

a dockside bar
rum runners and
buffet tunes

Lights

highway sedation-
numbed by the interplay of
streetlights and shadows

evening star-
a crow perched
atop a streetlight

Depth

slow rhythmic rocking
as I’m drawn deep into you
my lover the sea

crying gulls-
lost in your
cold embrace

Justice

who will stand and speak
when there is such injustice
if not I then who?

angry seas-
ramshackle rafts
adrift and lifeless

Birth

my journal entry-
today I start another
lap around the sun

willow branches-
a crack appears
in the robin’s egg

Sailing

plying the trade winds-
seeking safe harbor under
an ocean of sky

rolling seas-
sails reefed
before the storm

Temptation

clear azure waters
tropical sun overhead
melting my resolve

bronzed skin-
one more glass
of dutch courage
