Driving

driving through the night
the asphalt beneath my wheels
becomes slick with snow

my future-
lost in the oncoming
headlights

Homesick

strange muted voices
filtered through thin hotel walls
keeping me awake

overcast-
alone again
far from home

Vampire

the creak of hinges-
curtains drawn against the light
rising in the east

fading daylight-
the rustle of
leathery wings

Deadline

long after midnight-
my eyes lose their focus as
I write in my sleep

well past curfew-
tires on the
gravel drive

Leaves

autumn afternoon-
driving home in the dark past
drifts of wind blown leaves

light snow-
a swirl of
amber leaves

Thirst

palm leaves shade the sand-
reclining in a chaise lounge
drinking in the sun

salt air-
margaritas
whet my dreams

Welcome

strange and foreign shores-
weary travelers embark
on their next journey

soft underbrush-
a fawn turns to the
welcoming sun

Trains

down along the tracks-
in the distance the fog glows
with a passing train

a waiting owl-
the train echos
through the hollow

Sand

the living desert-
waves carried across the sand
by wind on the dunes

tumbleweeds-
a mindless expanse
of lifeless sand

Travel

waiting for the train
I stand on the platform near
the other pigeons

misty morning-
migrating geese
return to the sky
