Torment

anticipation-
enduring the pain, thankful
for feeling at all

deadheading-
rose thorns
pierce my skin

Drag

a flash of silver
swimming in place, lingering
against the current

buffeted and battered-
leaning
into the wind

Running

age pierces my side-
gasping as my youth runs out
between my fingers

crying crows-
my chest heaving at
mile marker two

Odyssey

it’s been a long ride-
this road’s often difficult
but worth the journey

apple blossoms-
taken by the
wandering wind

Mirage

the heat off your skin
bending the air and making
my resolve waver

desert sands-
shimmering water
in the distance

Somnolent

the hum of the road
whispering it’s lullaby
rocking me to sleep

empty conch shells-
a rush of warm surf
overcomes me

Rhythm

shortening my stride
slowing behind old lovers
walking hand in hand

icy harbor-
the crush of a
rising and falling tide

Night

cold drops of silver
spill into the open mouth
of the crescent moon

starlight-
a barn owl glides
through leafless trees

Betrayal

guttering gas lamps
weakly lighting the platform
where she waits, in vain

the scent of jasmine-
a silent stream
turns to ice

Water

tumbling down hill
chatting and laughing aloud
running to the sea

freshly frozen-
on the lake shore
crackled glass
