Road
bored eyes unfocused
staring out the car window
the guardrail floating
–
migrating geese-
an endless river
of taillights
bored eyes unfocused
staring out the car window
the guardrail floating
–
migrating geese-
an endless river
of taillights
encroaching shadows
race to fill the void left by
the crumbling day
–
sleeping dogs-
the shade of
a dying elm
the river of time
flows past this open window
and into my past
–
distant clouds-
a riverbed
of broken earth
driving home alone
all the while the taste of you
lingers on my tongue
–
an awkward kiss-
moths flutter
near the porch light
waiting on my turn-
step by step moving forward
ever so slowly
–
traffic-
another day
turns to night
breathless in the rain-
the greyhound bus pulls away
but you’re not on it
–
a cold rain-
my forehead
on the window
the solar transit
far to brief indeed on this
winter solstice day
–
winter reborn-
I depart and return
in darkness
ahead of the dawn
plodding bleary eyed into
an ashen twilight
–
flannel sheets-
coyotes barking
before the sunrise
the taste of winter
falling from the sky for miles
to melt on my tongue
–
platform two-
frost gathers
on my lashes
southward flying geese
their long journey just begun
as mine is ending
–
warm boots-
my old dog’s
snowy muzzle
