Rowboat

oars carve the water-
echoes of my lover’s voice
from the other shore

pale skin freckled-
fingers threading
through the water

Clouds

a dandelion seed
lazily drifts through the sky
as I watch the clouds

freshly cut grass-
making sculptures
from the clouds

Crime

reliving the past
what lengths I wouldn’t go to
for absolution

dogwood blossoms-
blue jays raid
a sparrow nest

Emptiness

nothing left at home
save the old chair and sofa
that I brought with me

vacant memories-
cobwebs cling
to empty shelves

Passing

one flame extinguished
while another adds it’s light
to the firmament

eyes downcast-
black armbands
wet with rain

Watching

the sky fades to black-
another episode down
with your hand in mine

crisp night air-
the pleiades
overhead

Calls

a thick veil of clouds-
the lullaby of crickets
sung beneath the rain

predawn fog-
a vixen’s cry
heralds the sun

Shadow

long evening shadows-
the sun half hidden behind
a stand of live oaks

sleepless-
my mind puts flesh
on the shadows

Heat

atop cotton sheets
the drone of the ceiling fan
keeping me awake

sleeping dogs-
paddle fans spin
in lazy circles

Penance

another meeting-
I know your failings so well
as I do my own

rain slicked neon-
another club soda
graces my glass
