Rising

staying up all night
just to fall asleep with you
and the breaking dawn

frogs in the trees-
rising woodsmoke
staining the sunset

Remains

in the aftermath-
flowers left by the roadside
fading in the sun

stippled sunlight-
mushrooms growing
on fallen trees

Changes

cloudy desert skies
bringing the promise of rain
and with it new life

parted clouds-
fresh cut tulips
on the table

Water

seeking atonement-
clad in fresh linens, walking
down to the water

dusty winds-
a lake of bricks
cracking in the sun

Rope

the frayed rope, broken
bubbles breaking the surface
of the swimming hole

sweet spring air-
off a chestnut branch
a stout rope swings

Widows

beauty and horror
entwined around each other
in a spider’s web

morning mist-
time passes
red on black

Broken

the marquee of dreams
in the theatre of my mind
ripe with false promise

summer rain-
the blind
desert sands

Renewal

ashes of the past
the land stoic and patient
awaiting rebirth

robins gather-
the old gardener
tends to his seedlings

Running

age pierces my side-
gasping as my youth runs out
between my fingers

crying crows-
my chest heaving at
mile marker two

Light

the long autumn sun
shining through the turning leaves
of October trees

frosted windows-
winter morning light
spreads across my floor
