Rememberence

thoughts of the fallen-
those who purchased our freedoms
with their flesh and blood

old glory-
a red haze blinding
the dogs of war

Sea

salty air, your hair
blown about your face by the
wind off the water

rising smoke-
below decks
on the ferry.

Frustration

my anger rising
holding back my tongue
while I try to breathe

irritation –
ring tails slip
into the shadows

Color

bright may afternoons-
the vibrant splash of dogwoods
warm suburban yards

cirrus clouds-
among the flowers
surreptitious bees

Train

a prairie sunrise-
rails rolling past my window
into the distance

crickets-
the silence of
a passing train

Shoreline

at the water’s edge
cattails and reeds bend leeward
softening the shore

the great salt marsh-
a blue heron wading
intently focused

Rising

staying up all night
just to fall asleep with you
and the breaking dawn

frogs in the trees-
rising woodsmoke
staining the sunset

Sleep

a blanket of clouds
pulled up tight over my head
shutting out the day

morning song-
the reluctance
of wakefulness

Wind

on a sea of glass-
the wind, a fickle mistress
abandoning me

moonless sky-
wolves howling
into the wind

Unruffled

ribbons of sea foam
settling across wet sands
as the tide comes in

light from the transom-
smoothing wrinkles
from her bedsheets
