Rememberence
thoughts of the fallen-
those who purchased our freedoms
with their flesh and blood
–
old glory-
a red haze blinding
the dogs of war
thoughts of the fallen-
those who purchased our freedoms
with their flesh and blood
–
old glory-
a red haze blinding
the dogs of war
salty air, your hair
blown about your face by the
wind off the water
–
rising smoke-
below decks
on the ferry.
my anger rising
holding back my tongue
while I try to breathe
–
irritation –
ring tails slip
into the shadows
bright may afternoons-
the vibrant splash of dogwoods
warm suburban yards
–
cirrus clouds-
among the flowers
surreptitious bees
a prairie sunrise-
rails rolling past my window
into the distance
–
crickets-
the silence of
a passing train
at the water’s edge
cattails and reeds bend leeward
softening the shore
–
the great salt marsh-
a blue heron wading
intently focused
staying up all night
just to fall asleep with you
and the breaking dawn
–
frogs in the trees-
rising woodsmoke
staining the sunset
a blanket of clouds
pulled up tight over my head
shutting out the day
–
morning song-
the reluctance
of wakefulness
on a sea of glass-
the wind, a fickle mistress
abandoning me
–
moonless sky-
wolves howling
into the wind
ribbons of sea foam
settling across wet sands
as the tide comes in
–
light from the transom-
smoothing wrinkles
from her bedsheets
