Interruption

warm sands and tropi-
the cat yowls and paws my face
demanding breakfast

morning zoom call-
for the love of god
mute your mic

History

a thin scrim of frost-
muddy waters churn beneath
this fragile veneer

storm clouds-
reopening
old wounds

Freedom

‘neath a festive sky-
cold ashes rain down upon
old lakota land

beneath the stars-
none of us free
unto the last

Peace

seeking inner peace-
silently blessing all those
who would do me ill

approaching dawn-
tea and birdsong
refills my soul

Dawn

lavender shadows-
flowers from a tuscan yard
in a patch of sun

cardinal songs-
a sun flower
turns its head

Awake

my rhododendrons-
robins erupt into song
just before the dawn

the sun rises-
heedless of the
whiskey and beer

Diner

grime covered windows-
watching the rain absently
stirring black coffee

street lights-
shadows of rain
on my paper napkin

Afternoon

a chorus of birds-
greening trees cast shade across
our secret meadow

slating sunlight-
motes of dust
defy gravity

Sun shower

dripping maple leaves-
raucous jays chase each other
through the sun shower

sunlit paving stones-
light rain ripples
transient puddles

Sunday

warm morning birdsong-
my love asleep next to me
aglow in the sun

robin song-
curtains sway in
the morning breeze
