Darkness

in the evening sky-
the suggestion of darkness
from the crescent moon

new moon-
black before
the dark of night

Shock

putting down the phone
the harsh meaning of your words
doesn’t register

distant rain-
unexpected
lightning

Snow

the taste of winter
falling from the sky for miles
to melt on my tongue

platform two-
frost gathers
on my lashes

Destinations

southward flying geese
their long journey just begun
as mine is ending

warm boots-
my old dog’s
snowy muzzle

Flags

heads bowed in respect
under an overcast sky
the flag at half mast

rising winds-
halyards ring
the flagpole

Harvest

early summer hay
cut by hand and harvested
drying in the sun

short shadows-
winnowing wheat
under the burning sun

Trees

november evening-
skeletal trees charcoal black
in the fading light

graveyard’s edge-
bone fingers
in the mist

Venus

rising from the sea-
her newly formed shores made from
black and steaming glass

predawn chill-
venus and jupiter dance
in the twilight

Chill

sheets of winter rain
wrung from the lowering sky
sideways in the wind

morning run-
frozen leaves
crack underfoot

Life

this life all too brief-
a freshly fallen snowflake
melting in my hand

rebirth-
spring sky in
a robin’s egg
