Sand
the living desert-
waves carried across the sand
by wind on the dunes
–
tumbleweeds-
a mindless expanse
of lifeless sand
the living desert-
waves carried across the sand
by wind on the dunes
–
tumbleweeds-
a mindless expanse
of lifeless sand
waiting for the train
I stand on the platform near
the other pigeons
–
misty morning-
migrating geese
return to the sky
I can’t sleep at all
visions of the restless dead
inhabit my dreams
–
moon shadows-
a raven robed
in cobwebs
rumbling through the dark
long trains roll westbound under
thunder and lightning
–
drying hay-
the countryside
glides past
echoes in the walls-
this unfurnished apartment
hiding its secrets
–
harvest moon-
cool wind
in the corn field
a raging torrent-
black water choked with debris
and bad memories
–
murky waters-
stirring up
the past
feeling out of place
out of time and out of mind
without you with me
–
unfamiliar stars-
in hotel sheets
missing you
the sea in the wind
salt, sand, and tropical sun
tangled in her hair
–
amid the waves-
she watches ships
ply her waters
clumps of garden weeds-
the summer sun warms my back
and eases my mind
–
a golden breeze-
the wind caught
in her hair
still she counts the ships-
her thick wool sweater stained red
with the setting sun
–
date night-
she sits at a table
set for one
