Broken

a candle and spoon-
unresponsive hazel eyes
far beyond my help

first snow-
yesterday’s news
line his shoes

Shelter

hard rain pelts the trees-
a hummingbird takes shelter
on my windowsill

desert noon-
seeking shelter
beneath the sand

Cut

mirror finished steel-
chrome and crimson upwell as
I lick the razor

melting ice-
warm and salty
on my tongue

Fire

downcast hazel eyes-
blistered feet dangle from the
hospital gurney

bitter winds-
the horizon
set aglow

Trains

down along the tracks-
in the distance the fog glows
with a passing train

a waiting owl-
the train echos
through the hollow

Devotion

black leather collar
tight around my neck lying
prostrate at your feet

cold stone-
village pews
stand empty

Fall

an autumn sunset-
the shadow of a goshawk
long on the meadow

oak leaves-
slipping below
a covered bridge

Sand

the living desert-
waves carried across the sand
by wind on the dunes

tumbleweeds-
a mindless expanse
of lifeless sand

Eerie

I can’t sleep at all
visions of the restless dead
inhabit my dreams

moon shadows-
a raven robed
in cobwebs

Murder

a roadside vigil-
flowers for a young man turned
forever nineteen

sudden silence-
shell casings
in the grass
