Passing

whole conversations
pass with just a knowing glance
incomplete silence

a heartbeat-
one moment
our lifetime

Smitten

a shy sideways glance
from you in my direction
I’m instantly hooked

september sky-
grass in my hair
you on my mind

Age

living with strangers-
years torn from my memory
replayed day by day

dimming light-
a quiet place
to lay my head

Weight

machine oiled blued steel
the weight of it heavier
than I expected

ice on the rocks-
another shot
added to my burden

Change

as the sun descends
she draws the curtain of night
to unveil the moon

angry lovers-
the evening sun
sets the sky aflame

Bells

dark rolling water
a rusty buoy’s hollow bell
tolls across the night

split rail fence-
a congregation
of cowbells

Hunt

a large gray crane stands
fishing the shallow waters
down among the reeds

wingbeats-
spending ripples where
once was a fish

Anticipation

sitting on the dock
losing patience waiting for
my ship to come in

a cold hard rain-
the dog brings
her leash

Hope

swallowing my doubts
returning day after day
in case you wake up

patchwork sunlight-
I brush the sleep
from your lips

Carving

left in a doorway
the simple offering of
a small jade Buddha

the slanting sun-
putting to bed the
last work of the day
