Memories

open bed pickup
memories caught by the wind
litter the highway

twisted fingers-
brittle pages of
her wedding album

Campfire

hot rising embers
intermingle with the stars
as they float away

cracking fire-
oak and maple
turning to ash

Harvest

broad fields of amber
spread under a western sky-
gentle autumn rain

thinning clouds-
baled hay
in the sun

Departure

the sliding doors shut
as the train pulls away I’m
still on the platform

changing winds-
the last robin
takes wing

Forge

the heat of the forge-
showers of embers rise up
into a gunmetal sky

cold anvil-
hammers
ringing

Horses

stallions in the sky
rearing out of boiling clouds
thunder through the night

late fall snow-
wild horses fade
into the woods

Road

bored eyes unfocused
staring out the car window
the guardrail floating

migrating geese-
an endless river
of taillights

Evil

deep in the shadows
a dark malevolence seeps
from out of the woods

wicker basket-
destroying angels
lie in wait

History

cracks in the pavement
mirrored by the crows feet in
a homeless man’s face

ruins-
ivy climbs
crumbling walls

Distance

from a different life
the passing of an old friend
rests on my shoulders

moonrise-
a silver wind
sways the curtains
