Flood

a raging torrent-
black water choked with debris
and bad memories

murky waters-
stirring up
the past

Burden

down by the river
releasing slights collected
after all these years

on my back-
the weight of countless
grains of sand

Volcano

bottles of cognac
cast upon volcanic rock
a gift to pele

catharsis-
rivers of fire
run to the sea

Death

my soul recoils from
the cold skeletal touch of
the angel of death

twilight-
fireflies lead me
across the river

Sand

an aging lighthouse
stands sand blasted and buried
by the walking dunes

frigid winds-
the predawn
desert frost

Mortality

pale whispers of men
pass by along the river
rowing in silence

walking stick in hand-
my footprints
fading

Depression

sharing in your pain-
my heart and soul wrapped around
your weary shoulders

staring at the floor-
the world rolls past
my window

Lightning

a cool cloudy night-
the horizon aglow with
fingers of lighting

dry lightning-
fire licks the walks
of the arroyo

Dawn

rivers of sunlight-
the waking ocean meets the sky
and the coming dawn

sunrise-
morning glory
blossoms

Death

blind and deaf old men
sit in darkened boardrooms and
beat the drums of war

black water-
death waiting
on the far bank
