watching while you sleep
your gentle breath, warm and sweet
so easily stilled
–
echoes of
silence spread
throughout the night

who I am is just
in between who I was and
who I will become
–
my future
hinges on keeping
my past promises

as I walk this earth
I tread on those before me
my path paved with love
–
footsteps
your past guides
my future

in the forest pond
floating water lilies tint
the fishes below
–
ripple-
a golden koi
breaks the surface

the noise in my head
a constant cacophony
that gives me no peace
–
whirlwind-
tranquility overcome
by turbulent thoughts

in twenty-two years
from now I pray I’ll still be
waking next to you
–
in anticipation-
dreaming of
our old age

the dragonfly’s drone
suddenly silenced when it
alights on my palm
–
stillness-
the dragonfly
landed

slow ocean waves
push the gathering sea foam
gently into shore
–
murmuring-
the ocean whispers
to the shore

ancient banyan roots
a lounging snapping turtle
basks in the sunlight
–
bayou roots-
the sun warms
a lazy turtle

there is no debate
we should be doing what’s right
not just what’s easy
–
morality is
happily doing
the hard work
