Dogs
any hope of sleep
spurned by the approaching dawn
and a snoring dog
–
sleeping dogs-
the violent death
of a cardboard box
any hope of sleep
spurned by the approaching dawn
and a snoring dog
–
sleeping dogs-
the violent death
of a cardboard box
the low morning sun
full of threats and promises
through the falling snow
–
skies alight-
the rumble
low and throaty
alone in the dark
the hunter chases his prey
deep into the night
–
cold moonlight-
he claims his place
among the stars
hot rising embers
intermingle with the stars
as they float away
–
cracking fire-
oak and maple
turning to ash
in the dead of night
the monster under my bed
turns out to be me
–
skeletal branches-
the window framing
unfounded fears
I close my eyes and
before sleep overtakes me
I pray for those I’ve killed
–
fireworks-
earplugs in
a darkened room
dark menacing skies
downed trees and power lines-
the storm overhead
–
brooding clouds-
wolves bay
in the distance
glowing yellow eyes-
pure malevolence lurking
within the shadows
–
soft underbelly-
the sudden turn
of claws and teeth
snoring quietly
your head still on my shoulder-
our show just over
–
dreams of snow-
waking to
tv static
an empty city-
young maples rises up through
the broken sidewalk
–
an old plow-
reclaimed
by the forest
