Travel

rumbling through the dark
long trains roll westbound under
thunder and lightning

drying hay-
the countryside
glides past

Whispers

echoes in the walls-
this unfurnished apartment
hiding its secrets

harvest moon-
cool wind
in the corn field

Time

late into the night-
pouring over lesson plans
and student papers

a clenched fist-
time still runs
through my fingers

Ablaze

a beacon unlit
the lighthouse tender starts the
long journey upwards

your hot breath-
the birth of
a new flame

Surprise

warm morning sunlight
shines upon on a stranger’s face
in my hotel bed

full moon-
muddy tracks
lead to my bed

Shore

a horseshoe crab shell
empty in the shadow of
an upturned rowboat

moonlit surf-
the lifeguard tower
stands empty

Distance

feeling out of place
out of time and out of mind
without you with me

unfamiliar stars-
in hotel sheets
missing you

Autumn

a bite in the air-
nighthawks begin flying south
along the shoreline

orange moon-
the year’s work
ready for harvest

Lights

highway sedation-
numbed by the interplay of
streetlights and shadows

evening star-
a crow perched
atop a streetlight

Late

the party over-
blackened wicks smolder in the
citronella pots

constellations-
old friends and
old stories
