Afloat
iron seas and skies
sailing into the north wind
my face to the rain
–
solitude-
my paddle dips
into glassy water
iron seas and skies
sailing into the north wind
my face to the rain
–
solitude-
my paddle dips
into glassy water
eaten alive, wedged
in the belly of the beast
resigned to his fate
–
roaring water-
the spawning grounds
await upstream
awake and alone
the contours of your body
still fresh in my sheets
–
a startled thrush-
impressions left
in the tall grass
misty morning run-
lake water rolls off the bow
oars dipping in sync
–
fingers entwined-
a light rain
ripples
a prairie sunrise-
rails rolling past my window
into the distance
–
crickets-
the silence of
a passing train
staying up all night
just to fall asleep with you
and the breaking dawn
–
frogs in the trees-
rising woodsmoke
staining the sunset
take my outstretched hand
and let us walk together
across this threshold
–
distant mountain peaks-
over the dewey grass
the rising sun
a blanket of clouds
pulled up tight over my head
shutting out the day
–
morning song-
the reluctance
of wakefulness
ribbons of sea foam
settling across wet sands
as the tide comes in
–
light from the transom-
smoothing wrinkles
from her bedsheets
beauty and horror
entwined around each other
in a spider’s web
–
morning mist-
time passes
red on black
