Future

going to bed late
dreading the dawn for who knows
what the day may bring

blowing snow-
the coarse growl
of a passing train

Slipping Out

walking on eggshells
at the door I stop and turn-
you’re watching me leave

predawn-
hard and cold
the bedroom floor

Smoke

shadows of chimneys
painted on the rising smoke
by the setting sun-

curls of smoke-
your lipstick on
my cigarette

Bird

tufts of rabbit fur
strewn across the forest floor
beneath the owls nest

burning sands-
the condor casts
a broad shadow

Evening

lighting up the sky-
the glow of paper lanterns
adrift in the night

evening stroll-
the dance
of fireflies

Evening

lighting up the sky-
the glow of paper lanterns
adrift in the night

evening stroll-
the dance
of fireflies

Road

bored eyes unfocused
staring out the car window
the guardrail floating

migrating geese-
an endless river
of taillights

Cats

the wind plays a cat
unravelling skeins of snow
as I walk along

the wee hours-
between my legs
a sleeping cat

Decline

encroaching shadows
race to fill the void left by
the crumbling day

sleeping dogs-
the shade of
a dying elm

Night

starless winter skies-
ebon velvet overhead
diamond dust below

curls of silver-
the night sky pierced
by the moon
