Fog

snow on the gravestones-
the caretaker’s lantern swings
haloed in the fog

moonlit snow-
fog sprawls
across the road

Driving

driving through the night
the asphalt beneath my wheels
becomes slick with snow

my future-
lost in the oncoming
headlights

Empty

an empty barstool-
I decide to take a risk
on conversation

empty glasses-
my napkin
torn to shreds

Moonlight

bright silver moonlight
streaming in through the skylight
pooling on the floor

quicksilver-
the full moon
above the trees

Distance

I placed you upon
a pedestal and now you’re
far beyond my reach

the house dark-
a distant moon
through the skylight

Temptation

tiny wisps of light
at the edge of the forest
dancing in the dark

the nighttime sea-
distant sirens
in the dark

Broken

late autumn sun-
rising waters crack the ice
from an early freeze

a white canvass-
fresh gesso broken by
crocus blossoms

Melt

late winter garden-
a calico patchwork of
leaves and melting snow

a hollow log-
rain falls
on melting ice

Wind

golden fields of wheat-
long blades of giant windmills
lazily turning

arid sun-
sagebrush
swirls in wind

Night

withered autumn leaves-
not sure if he’ll live to see
another sunrise

desert stars-
hard and blue
in the moonlight
