the whiteness of bone
long buried in the desert
revealed by the wind
–
summer evening-
dogwood petals
in the grass

chocolate ice cream
slowly melting in the heat
of the summer sun
–
amber skies-
an ice cream truck
around the corner

a weathered rowboat-
mooring line gently slapping
up against the dock
–
children jumping
from the pier-
lakeside

the fifth of July
a time for reflection on
what we have become
–
saguaro cactus-
a small sneaker
in the sand

in a shadow box
fragments of my broken heart
preserved and on display
–
shimmering heat-
pools of water
just out of reach

red stiletto heels
peeking out from underneath
the hem of her skirt
–
silk stockings-
black lines trace
the curve of her calves

the bathroom mirror-
a message written in steam
appears in your hand
–
starlit noon-
steam pours
from off the rocks

low rolling thunder-
lightning crawls across the sky
rattling windows
–
summer night-
the sky lit by
heat lightning

offshore thunderstorms-
an old salt returns to the
bosom of the sea
–
crimson skies
a funeral boat
adrift and alight

summer afternoon-
the hollow ring of wind chimes
in the stagnant air
–
still water-
minnows gather
beneath the footbridge
