Black

ebony leaves strewn
across an indigo sky
fading out to black

moonless-
the warm glow
of a distant fire

Weather

flurries of spring snow-
aspen seeds riding the wind
drifting in the sun

iron anvils-
the thickening
of august

Rain

the patter of rain-
rocking to the rhythm of
the impending storm

on the porch-
the evening air
thick with rain

Frustration

my anger rising
holding back my tongue
while I try to breathe

irritation –
ring tails slip
into the shadows

Color

bright may afternoons-
the vibrant splash of dogwoods
warm suburban yards

cirrus clouds-
among the flowers
surreptitious bees

Rising

staying up all night
just to fall asleep with you
and the breaking dawn

frogs in the trees-
rising woodsmoke
staining the sunset

Water

seeking atonement-
clad in fresh linens, walking
down to the water

dusty winds-
a lake of bricks
cracking in the sun

Splinters

shards of old grudges-
determined to stay angry
poisoning myself

dusty trainers-
running from the sound
of broken glass

Seizure

holding you tightly
wondering just where you go
when the darkness comes

stifling heat-
electric blue veins
dance across the storm

Prudence

my better judgement
failing me once again for
momentary bliss

late summer-
the prayers
of the mantis
