unspeakable acts-
unlearned lessons of the past
repeating again
–
cattle cars-
disappear within
the gates of hell

the last white rhino-
a moment of extinction
right before our eyes
–
blood in the dirt-
a portrait with
his latest kill

flat black soulless eyes
devoid of humanity
staring back at me
–
cold city street-
trying not to see
the homeless

angry bitter tears
burn as they roll down her face
and fall to the dirt
–
arid fields-
dust gathers
around his feet

charcoal black velvet-
an upholstered sky pierced by
pinholes of starlight
–
desert mesa-
the broad expanse
of the midnight sky

under crushing debt
the future turns to ashes
swept by our children
–
wild fire-
fed by embers
on the wind

locked in my safe room
the world burning down outside-
is it hot in here?
–
crimson sky-
ashes drifting
on hot winds

a vial of poison-
reminiscences of you
held up to my lips
–
desert skies-
reflections of death
in the watering hole

hot rising embers
intermingle with the stars
as they float away
–
cracking fire-
oak and maple
turning to ash

I wake to nothing
but the impression of you
left in my mattress
–
cold sweat-
twisted in
my bedsheets
