Shoah

unspeakable acts-
unlearned lessons of the past
repeating again

cattle cars-
disappear within
the gates of hell

Anniversary

fingers intertwined
your slippered feet atop mine
before the fire

two dozen years-
still waking up
next to you

Ash

under crushing debt
the future turns to ashes
swept by our children

wild fire-
fed by embers
on the wind

Burn

locked in my safe room
the world burning down outside-
is it hot in here?

crimson sky-
ashes drifting
on hot winds

Campfire

hot rising embers
intermingle with the stars
as they float away

cracking fire-
oak and maple
turning to ash

Veteran

I close my eyes and
before sleep overtakes me
I pray for those I’ve killed

fireworks-
earplugs in
a darkened room

Paper

written in anger
signed in blood and gently sealed
with the kiss of death

impending storm-
newspapers aloft
in the morning wind

Forge

the heat of the forge-
showers of embers rise up
into a gunmetal sky

cold anvil-
hammers
ringing

Morning

our fingers entwined-
the dusky blush of daybreak
mirrored in your face

the rising sun-
my finger traces
along your lips

Smoke

shadows of chimneys
painted on the rising smoke
by the setting sun-

curls of smoke-
your lipstick on
my cigarette
