Pittsburgh

just another day
thoughts and prayers for the dead while
no one does a thing

a quiet morning-
evil flourishes
in the silence

Sand

the living desert-
waves carried across the sand
by wind on the dunes

tumbleweeds-
a mindless expanse
of lifeless sand

Abuse

I hit a doorknob
or tripped and fell down the stairs-
I’m just so clumsy

an autumn eve-
the sky lit by
a house on fire

Craving

I don’t fall in love
but on a night like tonight
I’ll consider it

intoxicating-
licking the salt
from your lips

Ablaze

a beacon unlit
the lighthouse tender starts the
long journey upwards

your hot breath-
the birth of
a new flame

Empty

hundreds of candles-
an unlit testament to
this empty vigil

tumbled stone-
autumn’s first light
warms the piazza

Glimmer

the edge of the moon
nicks the night sky and reveals
the bare hint of light

cloaked in darkness-
betrayed by
a cigarette

Eyes

the burning red orb
casts its gaze about the land
hard and unblinking

ragweed-
my eyes swollen
and gritty

Volcano

bottles of cognac
cast upon volcanic rock
a gift to pele

catharsis-
rivers of fire
run to the sea

Heat

such oppressive heat-
my sleeping cat slowly drips
from his windowsill

shimmering sand-
false promises
in the distance
