Firefly

a cricket’s chorus-
mercury and venus lost
amid the fireflies

emergent dusk-
spatters of light
in the new grass

Warming

softly glowing coals-
the gentle curve of your hips
make the snow drifts blush

afternoon sun-
rising streams
of snow melt

Vapors

a flame extinguished-
I conjure up the darkness
to reclaim your soul

whisps of smoke-
a mirror
in the dark

Dark

bedding down the coals-
the warm glow of the campfire
keeps the wolves at bay

the full worm moon-
glowing yellow orbs
in the shadows

Southwest

terra cotta bricks-
the desert sunset lights up
an old bell tower

adobe twilight-
the slowly cooling
desert sand

Sisyphus

reaching for the sun-
all those years spent climbing up
just to fall back down

scorched earth-
blackened stumps
to the horizon

Horses

leaves blow through the barn-
the sweet smell of feed dust hangs
heavy in the air

ringing steel-
horseshoes red in
the farrier’s forge

Dusk

the sun bows her head-
day gives way to nightfall by
the ascendant moon

twilight-
fireflies call out
to emerging stars

Ice

woodsmoke in the air-
frozen rain falling on the
dry autumn leaves

coals set to bed-
the crackle of sleet
lingers in my ears

Firewood

steel axe and wedges-
an awful lot of effort
for a pile of wood

first snow-
chipmunks bedded
in the wood pile
