Firefly
a cricket’s chorus-
mercury and venus lost
amid the fireflies
–
emergent dusk-
spatters of light
in the new grass
a cricket’s chorus-
mercury and venus lost
amid the fireflies
–
emergent dusk-
spatters of light
in the new grass
softly glowing coals-
the gentle curve of your hips
make the snow drifts blush
–
afternoon sun-
rising streams
of snow melt
a flame extinguished-
I conjure up the darkness
to reclaim your soul
–
whisps of smoke-
a mirror
in the dark
bedding down the coals-
the warm glow of the campfire
keeps the wolves at bay
–
the full worm moon-
glowing yellow orbs
in the shadows
terra cotta bricks-
the desert sunset lights up
an old bell tower
–
adobe twilight-
the slowly cooling
desert sand
reaching for the sun-
all those years spent climbing up
just to fall back down
–
scorched earth-
blackened stumps
to the horizon
leaves blow through the barn-
the sweet smell of feed dust hangs
heavy in the air
–
ringing steel-
horseshoes red in
the farrier’s forge
the sun bows her head-
day gives way to nightfall by
the ascendant moon
–
twilight-
fireflies call out
to emerging stars
woodsmoke in the air-
frozen rain falling on the
dry autumn leaves
–
coals set to bed-
the crackle of sleet
lingers in my ears
steel axe and wedges-
an awful lot of effort
for a pile of wood
–
first snow-
chipmunks bedded
in the wood pile
