Acceptance

head back and arms wide
inviting the elements
to do what they will

an umbrella-
defenseless in
the light of day

Senses

your head on my chest
my face buried in your hair
breathing in your scent

the witching hour-
watching your heart
softly beating

Risk

changing directions
deciding my journey starts
were the pavement ends

a cold wind-
stepping out
onto thin ice

Disappointment

I break a bit more
every time I remember
you’re not coming home

overcast skies-
again the postman
skips my house

Zen

perfectly flat stones
skipping on a gentle arc
across the water

a quiet splash-
willow branches
touch the water

Impermanence

on this lonesome road
my only legacy the
footprints in the dust

empty shells-
ocean waves
wash the shore

History

roaring bonfires burn-
shadows of ancient stones paint
the salisbury plain

waning daylight-
a crow stands guard
over those long dead

Departed

the time worn tombstones
children taken far too soon
their stories untold

a cardinal takes wing-
poppy blossoms
in the church yard

Shelter

battlements of stone
rough hewn from the living rock
ever standing guard

howling wind
seeking refuge behind
these stone walls

Farther

standing in a queue
at the end of my patience
quite unlike this line

wind blown sagebrush-
the road I’m on ends
at the horizon
