Night

rains of twilight passed-
crickets outside my window
singing me to sleep

tv static-
the low hum
of a ceiling fan

Poverty

broken shower tiles
a bare bulb hangs from a chain
in my one room flat

after last call-
neon signs
light my way home

Cats

a bottlebrush tail
the cat readies to pounce on
the bat by my door

cans clatter-
small marauders
stalk the alleyway

Party

under the night sky
conversation and laughter
as the fire dies down

starlight-
good friends and
wine loosened tongues

Rain

unexpected rain-
a brief but welcome respite
from the summer heat

clearing skies-
the gift of
a rainbow

Fog

on the veranda-
fog slowly climbs the steps on
this soft starless night

walking the moon-
a thin fog blankets
fallen gravestones

Strangers

sitting on the train
I look across the aisle and
see you as you were

hot city streets-
a stranger wears
my memories

Swim

well gone past midnight
swimming in the rain, lightning
off in the distance

scattered clothes-
midnight at the
swimming hole

Browning

a copse of willows-
long verdant tresses brunette
in the evening light

prolonged drought-
green pastures
turn to dust

Rowboat

oars carve the water-
echoes of my lover’s voice
from the other shore

pale skin freckled-
fingers threading
through the water
