Midnight
deceptive shadows-
I make my way back to bed
the hall light left on
–
moonlight on the floor-
I check again
under her bed
deceptive shadows-
I make my way back to bed
the hall light left on
–
moonlight on the floor-
I check again
under her bed
deep mahogany-
my smile as you ease over
the worn brown leather
–
your auburn hair-
easy small talk
over peanuts
early afternoon-
a warm loaf of crusty bread
cooling on the stove
–
pumpkin candles-
easing into
a steaming bath
the dimly lit booth-
a small guttering candle
spills it’s meager light
–
two martinis-
your foot on
my bar stool
talking to himself-
making his way down a street
only he can see
–
gathering clouds-
her eyes a shade of
coffee cream
angry winter night-
grey shutters on the northern wall
banging in the wind
–
on the south porch-
sharing the sunrise as
the wind chimes slowly
the silver wolf moon-
in truth I’ll beg no solace
until the sunrise
–
so many people-
at lunch in the park
he yearns for the moon
tongue already sharp
another shot of bourbon
hones the razors edge
–
rain slicked asphalt-
streetlights glare
in the gutter
eggnog on the stove-
mace and cinnamon dress the
bottom of my glass
–
a glowing hearth-
outside the sun sets
on new year’s day
winter-fat raccoons
take refuge from the snow in
an abandoned crèche
–
christmas eve-
the snow on my roof
again undisturbed
