Hospital

uncomfortable chairs-
the smell of antiseptic
I’ll never forget

sheets of rain-
footsteps echo off
glazed white tile

Corruption

a waking nightmare-
here monsters fear to tread
into the darkness

black water-
probing the depths
of depravity

Alcohol

tongue already sharp
another shot of bourbon
hones the razors edge

rain slicked asphalt-
streetlights glare
in the gutter

Hope

approaching midnight-
hoping for the winds of change
to blow strong this year

fading daylight-
the future pinned
to our youth

Precarious

sitting on the stoop-
strangers walking past me with
judgment in their eyes

icy concrete steps-
wrought iron railings
rusted through

Age

a day at the beach-
budding romance captured in
faded polaroids

sundown-
walking slowly
hand in hand

Cacophony

past a dark alley
a chorus of feral cats
and toppled trash cans

over the car horns
and the shouting-
more sirens

Reflection

through endless farmland-
I suddenly see myself
in a passing train

ice tinged puddles-
a stranger lingers
in the water

Consciousness

a coyote’s howl-
I walk out of my own skin
and right into yours

afloat-
my body below
an anchor

Dusk

the sun bows her head-
day gives way to nightfall by
the ascendant moon

twilight-
fireflies call out
to emerging stars
