Pittsburgh

just another day
thoughts and prayers for the dead while
no one does a thing

a quiet morning-
evil flourishes
in the silence

Agitation

open before me
the pages of my journal
blank and foreboding

onshore winds-
sand and shells
in the roiling surf

Midnight

staring at the clock
trying to understand the
cruelty of time

aching for sleep-
minutes collect
in piles on the floor

Eerie

I can’t sleep at all
visions of the restless dead
inhabit my dreams

moon shadows-
a raven robed
in cobwebs

Abuse

I hit a doorknob
or tripped and fell down the stairs-
I’m just so clumsy

an autumn eve-
the sky lit by
a house on fire

Craving

I don’t fall in love
but on a night like tonight
I’ll consider it

intoxicating-
licking the salt
from your lips

Neglect

sunday afternoon
on the line the week’s washing
left out in the rain

empty bottles-
even the baby
has stopped crying

Change

trying to balance-
one foot on the precipice
of your adulthood

the arc of the sun-
change made
in a single day

Murder

a roadside vigil-
flowers for a young man turned
forever nineteen

sudden silence-
shell casings
in the grass

Danger

beauty and danger
your small delicate flower
surrounded by thorns

clearing haze-
following the trail
of blood diamonds
