Elders
as I walk this earth
I tread on those before me
my path paved with love
–
footsteps
your past guides
my future
as I walk this earth
I tread on those before me
my path paved with love
–
footsteps
your past guides
my future
a cold rain shower
washes down my upturned face
hiding bitter tears
–
cloudy
dark and moody
raining together
in twenty-two years
from now I pray I’ll still be
waking next to you
–
in anticipation-
dreaming of
our old age
semaphore flags snap
high in the ominous sky
double back and red
–
a tempest-
warning flags
flying high
an unseen rabbit
eyes the fox suspiciously
from beneath the hedge
–
hidden-
the rabbit spies
a hungry fox
often I frequent
my mind’s darker recesses
to search for solace
Or
in the dark corners
of my mind
seeking peace-
Peace is elusive
But a respite from the past
Would suffice for now
With outstretched talons
The barn owl glides silently
Focused on it prey
I took for granted
Always waking up next to
Your side of the bed
Lessons from the past
Harbingers of the future
We choose to ignore
