Shade

an ominous day
dark clouds pass before the sun
portents of ruin

stippled hillsides
revealing light and
fleeting shadows

Direction

guiding my journey
walking with the ghost of you
on my chosen path

dripping boulders
surging white water
streams diverging

Insomnia

thin walls, raised voices
across the street, it’s last call
in my third floor flat

crow on a gaslight
fog blanketing
cobblestones

Wetlands

sinking in the marsh
twisted and leafless corpses
wither in the sun

restive fish
dipping into
the surface

Tired

dressed in homespun
with an old straw broom, barefoot
sweeping the dirt floor

breaking sun
moist soil on
the coffin’s lid

Pirates

awash in the tide
a ruined galleon lists
her cannons askew

prevailing winds
limping home
on torn sails

Sunset

windows thrown open
sheer curtains gently wafting
in the evening breeze

becoming Icarus
flying westward
chasing the sun

Honed

working the block plane
paper thin curls of maple
littering the floor

a snowy owl
gliding silently
across the night

Pillars

a symbol of strength
welcoming travelers that
seek her destruction

in the forest
of fallen oaks
a sapling grows

Nature

clinging to the light
for fear I may yet answer
when the darkness calls

spring rains
surging cataracts
once docile streams
