Accident

a pair of sneakers
found by the side of the road
after the cleanup

waiting crows-
a possum’s
sacrifice

Loss

hug your children tight
for tonight there are parents
who won’t get that chance

barren trees-
young branches
devoid of leaves

Bird

tufts of rabbit fur
strewn across the forest floor
beneath the owls nest

burning sands-
the condor casts
a broad shadow

Evening

lighting up the sky-
the glow of paper lanterns
adrift in the night

evening stroll-
the dance
of fireflies

Decline

encroaching shadows
race to fill the void left by
the crumbling day

sleeping dogs-
the shade of
a dying elm

Evil

deep in the shadows
a dark malevolence seeps
from out of the woods

wicker basket-
destroying angels
lie in wait

Risk

the time has come to
take my heart down off the shelf
and gift it to you

long winter shadows-
a snowshoe hare
braves the sun

History

cracks in the pavement
mirrored by the crows feet in
a homeless man’s face

ruins-
ivy climbs
crumbling walls

Distance

from a different life
the passing of an old friend
rests on my shoulders

moonrise-
a silver wind
sways the curtains

Bed

almost a month now-
how can I still be finding
crumbs in our bed

fresh coffee-
your side of the bed
is still warm
