this morning’s bugle
reveille played by finches
outside my window

birdsong
pulling me
from slumber

through heavy eyelids
the siren song of blankets
calling out to me

weary…
stumbling
towards sleep

burnt umber thickets
briars silhouetted by
a russet sunset
–
brambles
illuminated by
the dying day

a feather’s tip nicks
the torn paper’s ragged edge
bleeding bright black ink
–
an obligation
the contract
signed in blood

in the full moon’s light
a desert scorpion glows
an unearthly blue
–
silver
illumination
of midnight

a flash of lighting
tears the fabric of the night
letting in the rain
–
wet brilliance
slicing through
shadows

a dying ember
brightened by love’s final breath
at last extinguished
–
autumn
the last robin
falls silent

deeply search your soul
and when the darkness calls you
choose not to answer
–
evil
waits for an
eager listener

watching while you sleep
your gentle breath, warm and sweet
so easily stilled
–
echoes of
silence spread
throughout the night
