Moonlight

a quicksilver moon-
coyotes in the woods call
the gathering dawn

winter moon-
afloat on the
midnight surf

Tired

the tv on low-
your breathing slows as you fall
asleep on my chest

the risen moon-
soft cries heard
as you fight sleep

Regret

the year end draws near-
looking back on regrets for
things I didn’t do

snowshoes-
stepping out
onto thin ice

Sunset

a sienna sun
set low in the eastern sky-
the treetops alight

red stratus clouds-
remnants of the
evening sun

Mirrors

a gilded mirror-
reflections of other lives
from across the room

frosted windows-
fire reflected
in your eyes

Rainfall

heavy pounding rain
outside my window the world-
a monet painting

early morning rain-
snare drumming
on the skylights

Ash

well after midnight
christmas eve fire in the hearth
burning down to ash

a warm hearth-
ashes mix with
the falling snow

Replacement

freshly cut flowers
in what used to be your urn
on my mantle piece

empty boxes-
the dog sleeps
on your side

Winter

winter is coming-
it seems only yesterday
the trees were in bloom

the forest-
awake under a
blanket of snow

Wake

with the rising sun
the smell of coffee clears the
cobwebs from my mind

smoldering campfire-
I blow on the
overnight coals
