Lost

walking the highway-
seems I lost myself while I
was looking for you

sandstorm-
the mirage
an oasis

Regret

early autumn leaves-
I should have asked you to dance
the first time we met

sidewalk bistro-
I glanced at my phone
and you were gone

Morning

midsummer morning-
a pair of cardinals perch
in the zebra grass

fields of mist-
a robin’s nest
full of shadows

Harvest

a spreading elm tree-
leathered fingers deftly weed
the cutting garden

flooded fields-
years of harvests
in her hands

Night

rains of twilight passed-
crickets outside my window
singing me to sleep

tv static-
the low hum
of a ceiling fan

Poverty

broken shower tiles
a bare bulb hangs from a chain
in my one room flat

after last call-
neon signs
light my way home

Danger

sitting at the bar-
beautiful and dangerous
death in a red dress

mangrove trees-
crocodiles
come and go

Roses

crimson rose petals
clinging to a withered stem
slowly turning brown

tea rose petals –
the crystal bowl
overflowing

Rain

unexpected rain-
a brief but welcome respite
from the summer heat

clearing skies-
the gift of
a rainbow

Fog

on the veranda-
fog slowly climbs the steps on
this soft starless night

walking the moon-
a thin fog blankets
fallen gravestones
