Reprieve
the pen freshly inked
yet hesitating over
whose name is written
–
falling leaves-
unheard, a hawk
passes overhead
the pen freshly inked
yet hesitating over
whose name is written
–
falling leaves-
unheard, a hawk
passes overhead
howling in the night
a cold wind pounds on my door
straining the hinges
–
black rain-
branches scrape
my darkened window
rising from a dream
tasting a memory that’s
almost elusive
–
floating-
beholden to the wind
over a rising sun
speak not of winter-
late autumn flowers bloom through
lightly falling snow
–
caramel sunlight-
autumn’s first
turning leaf
exploring the world
starting with the common ground
found beneath my feet
–
fading sunlight-
stone steps
along my path
trapped in the darkness
never wanting to leave this
beautiful nightmare
–
hoarfrost-
webs frozen
on the moor
faded love letters
the pages of our marriage
dog-eared and wrinkled
–
mulled cider-
clothes fresh
from the dryer
living day by day
striving to open my mind
and keep my mouth shut
–
nests amid the rafters-
prayer bells ring
in the rain
a murder of crows
as one silently take wing
into the august sky
–
turning winds-
a crow flies
before the sun
thick solemn silence
dozens of flag draped coffins
lining the tarmac
–
echoes of summer-
shell casings
in a folded flag
