Rain

becoming August
fevered skin, heat lightning, and
the promise of rain

an azure pond-
fish break the surface
amid the evening rain

Hope

swallowing my doubts
returning day after day
in case you wake up

patchwork sunlight-
I brush the sleep
from your lips

Ciara

a sprit of fire
shining brightly in the night
dowsed before it’s time

all at once-
the dancing flame
now only smoke

Kafkaesque

awake at first light
realizing far too late
I’m not who I thought

venus rising-
difficult memories
consigned to the fire

Humid

grey curls of wet smoke-
the kiss of embers linger
on her ruby lips

midnight sweat-
a lazy ceiling fan
stirs the air

Rising

by the temple gates
burning incense left as a
simple offering

hot springs-
steam rising from
the snow monkeys

Posthumous

pulled taut and snapping
the pole holding fast the flag
standing at half mast

icy rain
her cheeks
freshly wet

Soltice

the year’s longest night
herald the winter solstice
ere the morning comes

watching our breath-
the black of night
pierced by stars

Homeless

a torn cap worn low
collar turned against the wind
shrouded in darkness

a squalid doorway-
scant shelter from
the bitter cold

Frigid

contemplating life
and remembering the dead
this cold winter night

the cutting north wind-
heavily laden with
bitter freight
