Thirst

palm leaves shade the sand-
reclining in a chaise lounge
drinking in the sun

salt air-
margaritas
whet my dreams

Welcome

strange and foreign shores-
weary travelers embark
on their next journey

soft underbrush-
a fawn turns to the
welcoming sun

Light

a warm autumn glow-
dawn clouds steeped in honey spill
across the ocean

daybreak-
sunlight dances
on the wave tops

Agitation

open before me
the pages of my journal
blank and foreboding

onshore winds-
sand and shells
in the roiling surf

Sand

the living desert-
waves carried across the sand
by wind on the dunes

tumbleweeds-
a mindless expanse
of lifeless sand

Ablaze

a beacon unlit
the lighthouse tender starts the
long journey upwards

your hot breath-
the birth of
a new flame

Island

at work dreaming of
a caribbean romance
before summer ends

a dockside bar
rum runners and
buffet tunes

Shore

a horseshoe crab shell
empty in the shadow of
an upturned rowboat

moonlit surf-
the lifeguard tower
stands empty

Mermaid

the sea in the wind
salt, sand, and tropical sun
tangled in her hair

amid the waves-
she watches ships
ply her waters

Burden

down by the river
releasing slights collected
after all these years

on my back-
the weight of countless
grains of sand
