Rain

becoming August
fevered skin, heat lightning, and
the promise of rain

an azure pond-
fish break the surface
amid the evening rain

Anticipation

sitting on the dock
losing patience waiting for
my ship to come in

a cold hard rain-
the dog brings
her leash

Leap

on the precipice
staring out into the void
and back at myself

barren branches-
a great horned owl
spreads her wings

Shore

awash in the surf
my toes buried in the stars
strewn across the sky

ebb tide-
crushed shells
and hermit crabs

Flight

down by the lakeside
a skein of migrating geese
glide in for a rest

hot pavement-
the roar of flight
fills my ears

Prints

walking in the snow
grinning as you casually
step in my footprints

robin tracks-
early spring
snowfall

Rising

by the temple gates
burning incense left as a
simple offering

hot springs-
steam rising from
the snow monkeys

Heath

splintering sunlight
broad winter shadows reaching
out across the lea

fresh snow-
a smattering
of paw prints

Slumber

waiting for the thaw
beneath fallen leaves and snow
a box turtle sleeps

frosted windows-
deeply burrowed
under blankets

Winter

the low midday sun
shadows of geese noiselessly
passing overhead

dancing water
a clingy black shift
of morning ice
