Frustration

my anger rising
holding back my tongue
while I try to breathe

irritation –
ring tails slip
into the shadows

Color

bright may afternoons-
the vibrant splash of dogwoods
warm suburban yards

cirrus clouds-
among the flowers
surreptitious bees

Fin

time draws to a close-
I hold his hand, helping him
walk across this bridge

a pale horse-
the onus
of these souls

Train

a prairie sunrise-
rails rolling past my window
into the distance

crickets-
the silence of
a passing train

Motherhood

always by my side
the mother of my children
the love of my life

woven grass-
the sparrow
steadfast

Darkness

working down towards
the bottom of a bottle
searching for solace

after the rain-
a raven
hewn from coal

Lithos

along the roadside-
once a stately facade, now
a pile of old stones

gentle rain-
crows perch upon
a weathered grave

Shoreline

at the water’s edge
cattails and reeds bend leeward
softening the shore

the great salt marsh-
a blue heron wading
intently focused

Rising

staying up all night
just to fall asleep with you
and the breaking dawn

frogs in the trees-
rising woodsmoke
staining the sunset

Wind

on a sea of glass-
the wind, a fickle mistress
abandoning me

moonless sky-
wolves howling
into the wind
