Fog

sand hill cranes glide through
frost smoke on a mountain lake
as the day begins

coming ashore-
fog blankets
the lighthouse

Birds

her worn threadbare coat-
piles of bread crumbs spread between
the bird lady’s feet

a park bench-
sparrows land
on my shoulder

Dead

the village emptied
bodies lay unburied with
no one left to mourn

tumbleweeds-
sun scoured bones
picked clean

Shadows

moonlight in the trees-
silently a cold wind shifts
shadows on the snow

long shadows-
the warm wind
walks me home

Crimson

a kiss of sunlight
caught in the underside of
a cardinal’s wing

young rabbits-
wild strawberries
hidden in the grass

Nosferatu

hiding from the sun
living in the shadows while
I curse the darkness

the moon obscured-
my ancient thirst
unslaked

Sea

the sea my old friend
greets me with crushed oyster shells
rough beneath my feet

driftwood-
seagulls loiter
above the surf

Heat

such oppressive heat-
my sleeping cat slowly drips
from his windowsill

shimmering sand-
false promises
in the distance

Flower

gathering pollen-
down among the lavender
the honeybees work

august sun-
on the pond
the lotus blooms

Beach

a secluded beach
the plundered pirate’s chest lay
empty save the sand

flood tide-
sandpipers
brave the surf
