Gathering

winter moths gather-
snowflakes lit by the street lamp
in the bitter night

gathering drifts-
ice crawls up
my window

Weather

a cold rain falling-
trying to stay warm with tales
of wine and whiskey

white mountains-
caribou freeze
at a cracking branch

Wind

the fire laid on while
winter in all its fury
rages at my door

grey skies-
cruel winter winds
howl at the moon

Ice

far icy mountains
bathed in shades of white and blue
float on arctic seas

broken ice-
polar bears
search for respite

Fire

warm embers of clouds
gilded rose and violet
from the rising sun

dawn moon-
a crow alights
on an ashen branch

Death

with a poisoned pen
I write stories in the blood
of the innocent

desert sagebrush-
rattlesnakes hidden
in plain sight

Chance

I catch your eye as
we pass each other by but
you’re out of my league

noonday sun-
lions stalking
in the tall grass

Drunk

pour me another
for I’m not yet numb enough
to make new mistakes

darkling beetles-
drunk on the
morning dew

Stream

by a forest stream
above the frogs and crickets-
winter stars appear

late spring thaw-
fox kits cross
a fallen oak

Fear

bitter on the tongue-
the hot bilious taste of
someone else’s fear

an owl’s cry-
the field mouse
frozen
