Dawn

shadows of the moon
climbing down from the treetops
to hide from the sun

lakeside dawn-
eider ducks
begin to stir

bird

in a copper bowl
beneath a blooming dogwood
a robin splashes

sudden showers-
a crow flies
through the rain

Squirrel

one hapless squirrel-
suddenly half the city
plunged into darkness

pulling weeds-
squirrels drop acorns
on my head

Clouds

a dandelion seed
lazily drifts through the sky
as I watch the clouds

freshly cut grass-
making sculptures
from the clouds

Crime

reliving the past
what lengths I wouldn’t go to
for absolution

dogwood blossoms-
blue jays raid
a sparrow nest

Calls

a thick veil of clouds-
the lullaby of crickets
sung beneath the rain

predawn fog-
a vixen’s cry
heralds the sun

White

thin fringes of white
ring the brow of the mountain
furrowed by the past

white cliffs-
the sun glints
off the sea spray

Cemetery

blackbirds in the trees-
pebbles left on your headstone
in remembrance

knees in the soft earth-
I clear away
the weeds and leaves

Blue

frosted azure skies-
the curves of a white dragon
taken by the wind

pencil thin clouds-
the ocean reaches out
to touch the sky

Heat

atop cotton sheets
the drone of the ceiling fan
keeping me awake

sleeping dogs-
paddle fans spin
in lazy circles
