Gold

waiting on the sun-
geese fly before purple clouds
embroidered in gold

reflections-
golden koi
slowly pass

Regret

living in this house-
a shrine to your past regrets
and those yet to come

low tide-
finding sea glass
and jellyfish

Carts

an old wire pushcart-
she sits alone on her bench
surrounded by birds

under the bridge-
her shopping cart
full of treasures

Trapped

in an old wheelchair
a young girl waits deep inside
the shell of herself

first light-
a sliver of dawn
beneath the door

Death

days slowly passing-
the pain of every heartbeat
keeping me alive

raucous crows-
the carcass bears
silent witness

Morning

midsummer morning-
a pair of cardinals perch
in the zebra grass

fields of mist-
a robin’s nest
full of shadows

Cats

a bottlebrush tail
the cat readies to pounce on
the bat by my door

cans clatter-
small marauders
stalk the alleyway

Danger

sitting at the bar-
beautiful and dangerous
death in a red dress

mangrove trees-
crocodiles
come and go

Marsh

among the rushes
herons stand in the salt marsh
waiting for the tide

auburn sunrise-
dawn breezes stir
fields of cattails

Pets

shredded paper towels
last night’s garbage strewn about-
I know you’re to blame

morning sun –
in the doorway
indecisive
