Avoidance

flat black soulless eyes
devoid of humanity
staring back at me

cold city street-
trying not to see
the homeless

Dawn

rivers of sunlight-
the waking ocean meets the sky
and the coming dawn

sunrise-
morning glory
blossoms

Light

downtown abandoned-
sickly yellow light leaks from
a single street lamp

moths-
the guttering
porch light

Stars

charcoal black velvet-
an upholstered sky pierced by
pinholes of starlight

desert mesa-
the broad expanse
of the midnight sky

Boardwalk

barnacles gather
just below the waterline
where the piers once stood

rotting pilings-
waves, the echoes
of children’s laughter

Tree

watching from afar-
a tree falls in the forest
the silence unheard

old oak tree-
climbing vines
reach for the su

Snow

after the thunder
the sun dances in the snow
through the parting clouds

winter morning-
a snowy egret
dips her bill

Kairos

at once of two worlds-
straddling the razor’s edge
between life and death

winter sun-
the hawk’s shadow
grows smaller

Orion

alone in the dark
the hunter chases his prey
deep into the night

cold moonlight-
he claims his place
among the stars

Campfire

hot rising embers
intermingle with the stars
as they float away

cracking fire-
oak and maple
turning to ash
